Durability of Concrete

Keeping in view the importance of sustainability and longevity of structures, Civil  Engineering Department of Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Ludhiana  organised a webinar on ‘Durability of Concrete on 26th May,2021 in association with  JK Cement Ltd.

Coordinator, Prof. Yuvraj Singh, while addressing the participants said that, it is vital  to look into details and factors affecting the durability of concrete in order to promote  sustainability and to avoid huge repair and maintenance losses resulting due to poor  construction practices leading to early deterioration of structures. 

The expert from J K Cement, Mr. Vikas Malhotra enlightened the participants by  sharing his in-depth knowledge. Besides the detailed talk on the properties and  behaviour of concrete, he also discussed the merits of using PPC over OPC. He  emphasised on using fly ash in cement manufacturing in order to address the  environmental concerns. Furthermore, he highlighted the potential of construction  industry in developing countries like India. 

Over 200+ participants consisting of students, faculty and professionals from industry  registered for the webinar. The session was live streamed at YouTube besides it being  hosted at Google Meet. Followed by the webinar, an Online Quiz was conducted to  evaluate the takeaway from the session. 

Dr. Jagbir Singh, while addressing the attendees’ mentioned the importance and  relevance of this topic to ensure the quality construction. Highlighting the importance  of such educational webinars, he congratulated the organisers for their successful  efforts. 

In the end, Prof. Yuvraj Singh thanked all the participants and dignitaries for making  this program a great success.

Event: Bridge Constructor

The event will consist of 2 Rounds: a)  First Round: Quiz-Picto-Mania

  1. b) Second Round : Pont- Bâtiment

Rules For Quiz-Picto-Mania:

  1. This round will contain a quiz based on current affairs, general knowledge with logo, and Historical Architectural identification (pictorial form).
  2. The quiz will contain 15 questions :
    1. 5 Questions: Current Affairs and General Knowledge (1 mark each).
    2. 5 Questions:  Historical Architectural IdentificationPIctorial (2 marks each).
    3. 5 Questions: Pictorial test of the logo (2 marks each).
  3.  The quiz will be in the form of multiple-choice questions and will be time bounded i.e Each Question will have a time limit.
  4. A platform for quizzes will be  Kahoot.

Result: On the basis of the Results of the Quiz-Picto-Mania Round we will select the top 15 participants for our Mega Round i.e  Pont Bâtiment.

Note: In case of a tie between participants the least incorrect answer will be considered.

Rules For Pont-Bâtiment

  1. All the participants will be given three days to complete the project.
  2. We will provide a list of 25 things from which participants have to use a minimum of 10 things and a maximum of 25 things enlisted.
  3. Participants cannot use anything that is not enlisted in the materials given below, if anything is used outside the enlisted material, the bridge model will not be considered.

Note: Participants can use anything other than 25 things listed present at their home due to Lockdown but a maximum of 25 only.

  1. During the model-making process, participants have to click 10 photos of the model showing the progress of the project.
  2. A list of materials that participants have used is to be submitted in a PDF file.
  3. Participants will be provided with Google Form for Submission where they have to upload those photos in the form of PDF.

Skillenzia, an online event organised by Association of Civil Engineering  Students for the students of Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College. The aim  of this competition wasto enhance the creative skills, artistic skills, technical  skills, ability to work & thinking capacity. The event held from 10th April 2021  to 17th April 2021. It was a submission type event and submissions were  accepted through guru.gndec.ac.in / moodle.

The event consists of three categories –

  1. Meme-O-mania
  2. Pixel ‘21
  3. VID ‘21

The Topics of the event were:

  • Meme-O-mania – Online classes
  • Pixel ’21 – Reflection
  • VID ’21- Sustainable development

The event was judged by Prof. Yuvraj Singh. The event was conducted  successfully even in the online event. So, with the current state of things  prompting colleges to digitally engage their students in virtual events. A  number of students showed interest in the event by registering in the event  of skillenzia. Winners were honored with appreciation certificate and the  participants with participation certificates.
